Altitude BirdPopular Music: Practices, Formations and Change - Australian Perspectives
The papers collected here in this special edition of Altitude offer a brief snapshot of popular music research broadly connected with Australia. The essays demonstrate the variety of theoretical and methodological approaches used by researchers in the fields of popular music studies and cultural studies to explore themes of popular music practice, formation and change in an Australian context. The 15th Symposium of Australian Gastronomy
Theme: Beyond the Supermarket – Learning to Overcome Gastronomic Poverty
29th April – 2nd May 2007

We have continued to debate, refine and develop our ideas for the 15th Symposium. Largely because of our theme, above, we have decided to immerse ourselves and the symposium in the small fishing town of Dover. Moving the Symposium into Dover is a symbolic move, enabling us to be among the community where we hope to source much of the food and ideas for the symposium. The town also boasts a very lively corner store, within sight of a supermarket. The compact size and village atmosphere of Dover will draw us into the community, as we move from venue to venue, over the 3 days of the symposium.

Please submit abstracts to the Papers' Convener, Philip Mead (p.mead@utas.edu.au). Philip has asked that we advise you of the following timeline and requirements for papers:

  • Abstracts in line with the theme to be submitted by 30th November 2006
  • Papers to be submitted by 1st March 2007 so that we can provide attendees with published copies before the event
  • 20 minute presentations, using different media formats if you require, are welcome
  • Some presenters might be asked to contribute to a panel or short presentation if some ideas are repeated across several abstracts
  • There is already significant interest expressed in papers dealing with the role of the corner store
We have set the cost of the 15th Symposium at $550 per person. This covers all food, wine and associated venue costs, but not accommodation costs. To secure your place at the Symposium we require a $100 deposit, refundable until two months before the event i.e. Friday 23rd February 2007.

We would appreciate electronic funds transfer into our Symposium account if possible. Please use your name in the reference line (electronically) or deposit slip (manual pay in) so that your name will appear with your payment on our bank statement. When you electronically transfer your deposit, please email the completed registration form to anne.ripper@peopleplanners.com.au and tell us the date you made the deposit. Alternatively, post a cheque and completed registration form to Anne Ripper, 2 Church Street, Hobart 7000.

Attendees will be responsible for organising their own accommodation, principally at the range of B&B accommodation either in or in close proximity to Dover; however our accommodation convenor Jenny Williams, can help with your enquiries and may be able to organise some private beach shack accommodation as well. We do ask that when you book accommodation with a small cottage venue, you advise the proprietor that you are attending the 15th Symposium, so that other rooms in the establishment can be let to other Symposiasts who might later ring the same place. We are providing a link to the Discover Tasmania website, which should enable you to choose your accommodation: visit discovertasmania.com.au (or phone 1300 655 145) to look for accommodation in Dover or in the Huon, d'Entrecasteaux and Bruny region. The region on this web site is large so check the actual distance of your proposed accommodation from Dover (Bruny Island would not be suitable!)

Paul van Reyk, a Food & Home Cultures Research Group member has kindly offered to organise a panel if members are interested in attending the Symposium. Paul's email is pvanreyk@optusnet.com.au

Cultural Studies Association of Australasia
Annual Conference Dec 2007 - University of South Australia
Theme: Sustainability

I know this is early notice but we thought that people might have more chance of attending the annual conference if they could forward plan (especially postgraduates and those on contract positions).

The theme for the CSAA conference in 2007 is 'Sustainability'. We could plan on two panels - one devoted to food and one devoted to home. If you have any ideas for panels or would like to help organise a panel, please contact Dr Jean Duruz (jean.duruz@unisa.edu.au). There will be a call for papers closer to the conference.
